Robert Jackson was born in 1948 in Port Edward, near Prince Rupert—a community that produced several major Northwest Coast artists, including Dempsey Bob and Norman Tait. Robert and Dempsey credit their childhood friendship and the need to carve their own toys as the spark that led them into art. They later encouraged each other to explore their personal and tribal styles.
Robert carved regularly before enrolling in the new Kitanmax School of Northwest Coast Art and Design in Hazelton. From 1973 to 1976, he studied wood carving, jewelry making, and serigraph printing. In 1979, he opened Skyclan Art in Prince Rupert, a gallery focused on Northwest Coast art. After it closed in 1984, he returned to Hazelton and took a six‑year break from carving. During that time, he traveled to Texas and met his future wife, Hanna.
When Hanna moved to Hazelton with him, she was struck by the region’s art and history. She encouraged Robert to carve again. He began exploring the Gitxsan portrait mask, reaffirming his place as an innovative and skilled Northwest Coast sculptor and designer.
