Description
Bentwood boxes were traditionally used to store valued items such as food, tools, regalia, and ceremonial objects, making them essential to daily and ceremonial life. In addition, they are often decorated with clan crests, animals, and supernatural beings painted in the distinctive Northwest Coast formline style, which communicates family history, identity, and social status. They are useful objects and powerful cultural symbols and represent the close connection between art, function, and tradition in Northwest Coast cultures.
This limited edition silk screen print titled “Haida Chest Human Design” by Alvin Child was hand produced by the screen printing process. It is the only limited edition printing of this design. The artist has inspected and signed each copy in the edition. The printer has destroyed all trial copies and obliterated the printing stencils.
