Haida artist Alvin Child was born in Alert Bay in 1962. After his father passed away when he was an infant, his family moved to Nanaimo, BC, where his mother later remarried. Alvin recalls a supportive childhood shaped by his mother and adoptive father, Ron Child, who encouraged education. He eventually earned an Engineering degree from BCIT, long before art became a central part of his life.

His artistic path began unexpectedly in 1984. While walking through Victoria’s Chinatown, Alvin followed the sound of a chainsaw to a workshop on Herald Street. Inside, he found a carver shaping a totem pole. The artist, John Livingston, recognized Alvin through his mother and welcomed him in. Alvin spent hours watching him work, sparking a mentorship and friendship that lasted nearly 35 years.

Since then, Alvin has created numerous limited‑edition screen prints, carved hundreds of plaques, and painted many drums. He now plans to focus more on two‑dimensional artwork as his practice continues to evolve.
