"Rendered in the striking formline-inspired visual language of the Pacific Northwest, He Who Carries Stories is a tribute to the sacred role of the raven. Raven is a revered messenger, trickster, and keeper of ancestral knowledge.
This piece radiates a quiet, symbolic power: the raven, wing extended, appears mid-flight, or mid-transformation, embodying movement between realms, sky, earth, spirit. Embedded within its form are traditional ovoids and U-shapes, layered with intention. The outstretched wing resembles a hand, a subtle gesture of offering, teaching, or the passing down of memory. A mist of red drifts across the lower half, reminiscent of blood, sacrifice, or the oral histories that live within the land and body.
Behind the raven a faint circle grows, the sun barely breaking through the darkness. It suggests the warmth of truth, the promise of new light and the ever present guidance of ancestors. This crimson hue and soft light echo the importance of the stories carried by Raven; not just tales of creation and triumph, but of loss, survival, and enduring strength.
With this work, Lewis invites viewers to reflect on the importance of story as a vessel; how it moves through generations like breath through feathers, and how those who carry it, like the raven, are both witness and guide."
